The spread around it is huge - the same three days are sold both for under a hundred dollars and for several hundred - and that spread is not about greed. It is about what is inside: a bed in a dorm or a private room, a group of fifteen or of four, your own bike or a driver in front of you.

The cheapest offers are group tours with dorm beds: you ride in a column of a dozen bikes, sleep in a shared room in a homestay, and eat what the whole group eats. It works, and for many people it is the point - the group is half the trip.
The upper half of the range is private tours: only your group on the road, a private room at every stop, and the guide adjusts the pace to you rather than to fifteen strangers. Between those two poles sit the middle options - a small group of four to eight, private room, same route.
One more thing quietly moves the price: whether transport from Hanoi is inside. Ha Giang is a night bus away from the capital, and some operators put the sleeper bus both ways into the package while others price the loop alone. That is easily forty dollars of difference for the same days on the road.
Riding yourself, easy rider, or a jeep
Sitting behind an easy rider is usually the cheapest way to see the loop, and it is the honest choice if you have never ridden a manual bike on mountain roads. The driver knows where the gravel starts and where the fog sits at seven in the morning; you look around instead of at the road.
Riding yourself costs a little more and demands an actual licence - the police on this loop do check, and the fines are set by decree, not by mood. If you have never handled a semi-automatic, the loop is a bad place to learn: Ma Pi Leng is a cliff road without a barrier for long stretches.
The jeep is the priciest line in the table and the one that makes sense in the rain. In wet season the loop turns into red clay, and a roofed vehicle stops being a compromise - it becomes the only way to actually see anything through four days of drizzle.

What to check before you pay
Ask what the price includes and what it does not - the gap between two similar offers is almost always there. Entrance permits, the boat on the Nho Que river, meals beyond breakfast, the bus from Hanoi: each of them is either inside the number or waiting for you in cash.
Ask about the group size and hold the operator to the answer. «Small group» means four to eight for some and up to fifteen for others, and on a mountain road that is the difference between stopping where you want and stopping where the fifteenth rider needs to.
And ask what happens if the weather turns. The good answer is a specific one - a rest day, a changed route, a jeep instead of bikes. The bad answer is silence, and it is better to hear it before the deposit than on day two.
