Motorbike rental in Nha Trang is simpler than in the mountain towns: a six-kilometre beach with a boulevard, a flat coast road north to Doc Let and south to Cam Ranh, and mountains starting right behind the city. Most trips here need nothing more than a scooter, and the fleet in town is mostly scooters. You collect the bike in the centre or on the northern seafront, or have it brought to your hotel, pay the rental directly, leave cash or copies of your documents as deposit, and return it with the same fuel.
What it costs, in plain words: a basic scooter is cheaper than a current 150-160cc one, a clutch motorcycle is noticeably dearer than any scooter, a week comes out a little below the daily rate, and a month is priced separately at roughly half per day. What sets Nha Trang apart as a rental town: the fleet is older and more local. When we built the cards of local rentals from public sources, their price lists included models not in our reference library - the Honda Fortune, the Yamaha YBR, the Lifan Storm - so we skipped those lines rather than invent specifications. Scooters here are also named by generation, "Airblade 4", "PCX 3", not by engine size. Ask for the exact displacement: the licence and the price both hang on it.

Deposit and documents
Among the Nha Trang rentals we collected from public sources, the deposit differs from shop to shop. One does not publish its terms at all. Another states plainly that it does not take money as security and asks only for a photo of your passport. Partners who filled in their own card have the deposit written on it: cash, a document, or both. We promise nothing on behalf of a rental, but we show its terms before the request, not after.
What to leave and what not to. A cash deposit is the standard: a few hundred thousand dong on a plain scooter, tens of millions on an expensive motorcycle, the figure written on the offer. Copies of the passport and licence cover identification. Do not leave the original passport: as security it is worth nothing - it belongs to the state that issued it - and you need it for the hospital, the flight and the border. The sentence that helps, said calmly and before you commit: "I cannot leave the original, I can leave a cash deposit and copies of everything." We ask a guest for the minimum of personal data: the request goes out without any registration, and documents are shown at handover.
The licence. For anything over 50cc, which is nearly every rental bike, Vietnam requires a category A licence. A national licence works only together with an International Driving Permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention; the IDP only translates a licence that already has the motorcycle category. The 1949 Geneva permit issued in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan is not recognised. An IDP cannot be obtained inside Vietnam - only before the trip.
Without one. Under decree 168/2024 the fine for riding without a valid licence depends on engine size: one band up to 125cc, a band two to three times higher above it, and in both cases the bike can be impounded. Exact amounts are in the traffic fines guide. Worse than the fine: a travel policy almost certainly excludes a motorbike accident when you ride unlicensed, and the hospital and evacuation bills become yours. A rental that asks for your licence is not being difficult - under article 264 of the Criminal Code the rental is liable too.
Where to pick up, and delivery
For rental purposes Nha Trang splits into four zones: the centre, Vinh Hai in the north, Vinh Nguyen in the south and Cam Ranh airport. The rentals we have collected sit in the centre and the north: one shop on Nguyen Thien Thuat street, the fleet of one partner at the northern end on Vinh Hai, and a third that does not publish its street and works by delivery. The district is public; the exact address is shown after the request is confirmed.
How handover is arranged. Once the request is confirmed, the rental writes back with where and when to collect, and that message is where you confirm engine size, year, inclusions and deposit. Coming in person is worth it for the helmet: it can only be fitted to your head on the spot, and a delivered one often does not fit.
Delivery is not universal, and the rental sets its price. Some of the Nha Trang shops whose cards we built from their own websites say plainly that they bring the bike to your hotel for free; one also to apartments and the railway station. With the others it is a question for the conversation: elsewhere it may be a separate charge or not offered at all. Cam Ranh airport is a question for the rental too.
Which bike to rent in Nha Trang
The city, the beach and the cafes along the boulevard: an automatic scooter of 110-160cc, nothing more. The coast road north to Doc Let and south to Cam Ranh is flat and fast, and a 150-160cc scooter handles it calmly even two-up. That is why the Nha Trang catalogue is mostly scooters.
The passes inland are a different matter. A scooter stops being the right answer on long mountain descents, where small brakes with no engine braking overheat, and on dirt, where small wheels do not hold. For the Hon Ba road, the one route we have measured here, the route page recommends a clutch bike of the Yamaha XT 250 class: thirty-three kilometres of climbing and eighty-seven hard turns is no place for a scooter.
Two mistakes spoil a trip: too much bike and too little. A 400cc motorcycle in city traffic rides slower, runs hotter and frightens more than a 125 scooter. A 110cc scooter with two adults and backpacks heading uphill is genuinely unsafe. Take the hardest thing you are planning, not the average day, and choose the bike for that. Taking the bike over: the checklist
Four minutes at handover settle almost every argument at return. Photograph the bike from every side in daylight, including existing scratches and the odometer, and send the photos to the rental and to yourself by message - that gives them a timestamp neither side controls. Have every scratch written into the contract or into the message confirming the handover.
Then the machine. Brakes: both levers should bite before mid-travel. Lights: headlight, brake light, indicators - not a formality on the coast road after dark. Tyres: tread and pressure, especially before Hon Ba. Fuel: note the level or photograph it; the bike goes back with about the same. Helmet: it fastens and fits - an unfastened helmet is fined the same as none, and the rider pays for both seats.
The papers of the bike. The registration card or a copy travels with the bike; many rentals keep the original, which is fine if you have the copy. Ask what happens on a breakdown: natural wear, a dead battery, an engine issue you did not cause is a problem for the rental - they fix it or swap the bike. A flat tyre is traditionally on the rider. Damage from a fall is on you - that is what the handover photos are for.
The return. Come back in daylight, with the fuel where it was, and go over the bike with the rental against the same photos. The deposit is returned on the spot if the bike is intact. In a dispute, do not agree a number in the first ten minutes and message us: we take the side of the guest.
Where to ride from Nha Trang
We have one measured route in Nha Trang so far - the Hon Ba road: 33.3 km uphill, a climb of 1496 m without a single descent, the summit at 1545 m, 87 turns sharper than 60 degrees. The surface is not recorded in OpenStreetMap - unknown, not asphalt. The nearest fuel station is 2.4 km from the road, at the bottom: the tank has to cover the climb and the way back. The coast road north to Doc Let and south to Cam Ranh is flat and fast. We have not measured it; a scooter is enough. Plan around the rain: the first half of the year is close to dry, October and November are the wettest, and at the top of Hon Ba the same rain is cloud. Common questions about motorbike rental in Nha Trang
Can I rent a bike in Nha Trang without a licence? A rental may hand one over, but the law does not change: anything over 50cc needs a category A licence with a 1968 IDP, the fine runs into millions of dong, the bike can be impounded, and insurance will refuse a claim after a crash. Every card states which licence the bike needs.
Do I have to leave my passport? No. A copy or a photo is normal practice; the original stays with you. A cash deposit is the standard substitute, and its amount is on the offer before you send the request.
